  • Certificated paralegal: In order to become a certificated paralegal an individual must obtain training in a paralegal program, preferably an ABA Approved Paralegal program. At the end of successfully completed the coursework in a paralegal program, a paralegal certificate is earned. An exception to the certificate requirement is for paralegals that were grandfathered in when the certificate became a requirement.

Other opportunities for paralegals include careers as a freelance paralegal, legal assistants, researcher and investigator in the private and public sector. It is important to keep in mind that attorneys prefer to hire ABA Approved Paralegal program graduates for these positions as well.

People wonder what type of job is available after graduating from an ABA Approved Paralegal program. Some of the paralegal career opportunities in the private sector include working in the following legal specialties among others:

Some of the duties a paralegal may be involved in include interviewing clients, research and drafting legal documents. All work by the paralegal must be done under the supervision of a licensed attorney. In California, this is mandated by California Business and Professions Code 6450.

Some of the opportunities available for paralegals in the public sector or government include working for attorneys in the following offices or agencies:
